Inspiration in a bottle

the-unhype.deviantart.com

This month I’m beginning a weekly series which I  call PENspirational, MUSEtastic, Talks for Writers. Basically, videos  that have inspired me as a writer. Many of these will be TED talks, but not all. (If you haven’t checked out TED.com, please do. It’s a wealth of inspiration.)

Truthfully, right now, it is all I can do to share a video or two… as I continue to meet the demands of moving, selling a house, meeting a book series deadline and reading all the manuscript submissions coming into The Purcell Agency. My life, to say the least, is very full!

Anyway, enjoy this video. Andrew Stanton is a writer, actor and producer – a triple threat, to say the least. He worked on Toy Story and WALL-E… among other movies.  He’s also a very entertaining speaker and knows just a bit (A BIG BIT) about story telling :)

ONE BOOK – ONE MILLION DOLLARS

By Lorijo Metz · Comments (11)
Thursday, April 4th, 2013

The other day, after listening to The War of Art, by Steven Pressfield (my 4th time listening to it, by the way) my husband and I The War of Artstarted discussing what it meant to be passionate about your art. To really love what you do—what you create—versus simply working for money. He posed this question:

What if someone offered to pay one million dollars for your shiny new unpublished novel, but in selling your novel to them, they would own all the rights and only they would ever read it?

No one else—Nunca! Ever!

One Million Dollar BillMy initial response was, “Fine with me. I’ll gladly take the money and write another novel.”

Then I thought about it. I write educational books for hire all the time. I enjoy writing them, but there’s no question I write them for money… although, I make nowhere close to a million dollars. Too bad.

But, what about my novel?

I’m not the type of writer who can whip out a novel every few months. WHEELS, my first novel, took me several years to write. What if after all that work, all the time spent getting to know my characters, their world, their deepest desires—not to mention all the daydreams I’d had of people actually reading my story—what if after all that, only one person ever read it?

I can’t honestly say the money wouldn’t be enticing—very enticing—but I know if I took the deal, a large part of me would be sad. It would feel as if I’d been silenced. Like a chunk of me would remain hidden from the world for the rest of my life. In fact, the more I thought about my husband’s question, the more empty, ugly and unappealing the offer became.

Then again—A MILLION DOLLARS!
What would you do?

Just Ask!

By Lorijo Metz · Comments (0)
Tuesday, March 12th, 2013

I’m not sure where the hours have going lately. Packing, selling furniture, multiple showings of our house—not to mention  my new job—have left me a bit loopy. Plus, I’m getting ready to go on the road to visit my daughter in Savannah, GA in a few days. That said, in the spirit of TED (which means, in the spirit of sharing useful information) I’m sharing a recently watch TED presentation by the spouse of one of my favorite authors—non other than Neil Gaiman!

Amanda Palmer is insightful as well as entertaining. Her presentation is short and definitely worth the watch. (And much better than any post I could write, at the moment.) Enjoy!

By the way, my niece Kristan may not have watched this video, but she’s doing exactly what Amanda Palmer preaches and asking for help for her precious little dog. Foxy Lady (her dog, not Kristan) needs another expensive surgery to help save her little doggy leg. If you’d like to help, or just check out Kristan’s request, click on Foxy’s cute little face below:

Garlic, lots and lots of Garlic!

Snow Days

Not a good day to lay in the hammock

Where I live, we’re getting lots of snow. Lots and lots of snow! In fact, I just finished my first round of shoveling for the day. What’s more, I didn’t bother to take a shower this morning, because I expect to be outside shoveling or snow blowing at least two or three more times before the day is through.

Luckily, I love snow!

Henry Snow Dog

One of my favorite pictures of Henry, from a snowy evening walk

Snow is a great excuse to get outside, get a little exercise, fresh air and see some of my neighbors. My dog, Henry, loves it too—especially the chance to chase snowballs and make yellow snow.

What I really like about snow days, however, is the warm cozy feeling I get when I come inside. Usually this means fixing myself a cup of hot chocolate, but today I’m going for the garlic!

Lots and lots of garlic!

Garlicky Potatoes and Spaghetti Squash.

The Spaghetti Squash is in the oven

Those of you who have ever had your house up for sale will understand. When potential buyers walk into your house, the scent of garlic is not one of the first… or even the last thing, you when them to notice. However, as most house hunting is done on weekends, and even less is done during snow storms, I’m taking advantage of weather and fixing one of my favorite dishes, Garlicky Potatoes and Spaghetti Squash.

Yum, yum!

After that, I’m hunkering down in front of my computer. In between snow shoveling, I hope to get a little work done on my novel and read a few submissions that have come in to the Purcell Agency.

What’s your favorite way to spend a snowy day?

MY BIG NEWS! THE PURCELL AGENCY

By Lorijo Metz · Comments (2)
Sunday, March 3rd, 2013

Writers, by nature, tend to be entrepreneurial. Whether they choose to self-publish or go the more traditional route and submit to agents and/or publishers, successful writers soon realize writing is only, at most, half their job.

In my years as a writer, I’ve been traditional published, self-published and have written several works-for-hire for an educational publisher. Along the way, I’ve made many good writer friends; participated in, as well as organized, many critique groups; and worked with several writing organizations. Those who know me know that entrepreneurialism runs in blood! So, it was only natural when my good friend and writing buddy, Tina P. Schwartz, asked if I’d like to join her new literary agency, I jumped at the chance. Tina is not the biggest Sci-fi or Fantasy fan and so…

Author and Literary Agent, Tina P. Schwartz

MY BIG NEWS

(Drum roll please!)

Beginning today (Ahem… well, maybe 2 days ago) The Purcell Agency, which specializes in children and teen literature, is accepting submissions for middle grade and YA fantasy and science fiction. (Yes, most of those submissions will be directed to me, Jr. Literary Agent Lorijo Metz) To find out more about submissions (what to submit and WHAT NOT to submit) visit our website.

www.thepurcellagency.com

As an agent in training (a.k.a. Junior Agent…the title makes me feel about 12-years-old) I have a lot to learn, but I’m looking forward to it. More importantly, I’m looking forward to making many of your dreams come true!

    • Lorijo Metz lives with her husband and little brown dog in a hamlet just north of Chicago, IL. Though she has a degree in acting and directing, she much prefers the anonymity of the keyboard, allowing her characters to revel in the spotlight while she sits quietly sipping tea or coffee, nibbling on cookies, and dreaming up ways to complicate their lives. Lorijo is the author of the picture book Floridius Bloom and the Planet of Gloom, illustrated by Matt Phelan and published by Dial Books for Young Readers; as well as the author of over 25 nonfiction, educational books for kids, published by Powerkids Press. WHEELS is her first YA novel and first venture into indie publishing. In 2013, Lorijo will have another first as she makes her début as a lyricist on children’s singer and songwriter, Owen Duggan’s new cd, Puppy Dog Jig, for which she wrote the lyrics for the title track.
